The Parents Association are hosting the Bealtaine Festival on the 1st of May from 12 to 3 pm. It promises to be a fun day for all the family to celebrate the coming of summer to Mol an Óige.

Summer Solstice/ St. John’s Eve

This is the final festival of the school year. It is held on a suitable day around the 21st to 24th of June. The whole school community is invited to have a picnic together to celebrate the longest day of the year. Sixth class light a bonfire with torches they make themselves. Then we share food and stories. When the bonfire has died down, we jump across the embers as a symbol of all the thresholds we have crossed during the year.

Bealtaine

On the first of May, we celebrate the arrival of summer, by collecting bluebells and other wild flowers to decorate ourselves and our school. We sing songs and tell stories. We use the wild garlic to make some food to share.

Around this time, the parents council organise a Bealtainne festival outside school time. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to come together and spend time outside enjoying the beauty of nature.

Easter

Before the spring break, students plant an Easter garden with oats, barley and rye. We do this as a reminder of the rebirth of nature every year and to prepare for the following seasons.

The term is finished off with a cup of tea for parents and a slice of Easter cake made by the junior infant room.

Saint Patrick’s Day

The week before St Patrick’s day is when we celebrate all things Irish through Irish. We teach and learn as much as possible through the medium of our native language. This culminates in a ceilí Mór with parents, children and local musicians coming together to dance the Siege of Ennis and Ballaí Luimnigh.

On St Patrick’s day itself, the school community gather together in their costumes to join the Ennistymon parade as it marches through the streets of the town.

Imbolc St. Brigid’s Day

The 1st of February is the Irish festival of spring. We honour the Celtic/ Christian goddess Brigit through story, art and song. We then go and pick rushes to our beautiful school site. On return to school, parents join us to make traditional Brigit’s crosses. A lovely welcome to the brighter days of spring. The following day is candlemas day. This is celebrated individually by different classrooms, bringing lighted candles outside to ‘plant’ our light in nature.

Christmas Féile

This event is organised by the parents council and held in the school grounds in December. There are stalls selling handmade crafts and gifts, a cafe with delicious food baked by parents, games and activities, live music and a raffle. It is always great fun and open to the whole community.

Festival of Light

This festival takes place about four weeks before Christmas. A beautiful spiral of greenery is lit up by the children’s individual candles. This helps to remind us that even in the darkest days of winter our inner light will carry us through.

Samhain

Samhain is an old traditional festival in Irish culture that has become popular around the world. We love to get dressed up in our spookiest costumes. A scary story at assembly starts the day. Sixth class provide games and entertainment for the rest of the students.
